This is my second pixel 4 xl, first one was dead straight out of the box. This one I've had since Nov 2019 working fine untill recently. Battery stuck on 50% won't change even when charge or discharge. Today it randomly crashed/shutdown, would turn back on untill I plugged it into a charger. Then had a battery symbol with a ?. Which was the same symbol the first pixel 4xl had. The phone eventually turned on, I've tried turning off location, rebooting still having issues

It is *not* a software issue Penelope.
An Australia tech post reveals it is an issue with the battery FPC connector that needed replacing under warranty (hence the pressing on that connection temporarily fixing for some people)
So its hardware. Period.
Without new parts being fitted, it's not going away.

Had the same problem battery stayed on 50% , did the google support live Chat , chatting with the Agent through live chat asked to check system update and did a factory reset , unfortunately it did not work after the factory reset , so was told they are offering a one year repair program and the repair will be completely free of cost .....

There really isn't anything to agree or disagree with. I contacted google and was told it was out of warranty. I contact a listed repair location and was told it was the battery. I replaced the battery myself. It took me 30 min and $17.00 and the phone works like new.

I sent it back to Google as it had a few weeks of warranty remaining. They sent me what appears to be a new phone. Problem solved. Thanks for the replies.

Guys, google has extended warranty for this. I just chatted with a customer support person (Melvin), who was super helpful and gave me the options for getting this fixed. If it is a device issue with it being reset or battery issues you automatically get extended warranty. If in NYC you can go to the Google shop on 9th ave or you can go to the Ubreakifix places.
The support is really good!! Was really surprised at how helpful they are.

It's a software issue.
If you put the phone into fastboot mode (first, turn the device off, then hold the power button and down volume for ten seconds), the phone will charge normally, showing 100% again once charged and turned back on. It will discharge again normally if left on.
This doesn't fix the problem I have found, but does point out that the battery and charger detection circuits work normally, but only in fast boot mode. Therefore, it's not the battery, and not the connection
